Saint-Jean-du-Doigt – a Village of artists

Tradition of Painting in Saint Jean

As in Pont-Aven in South Finistère, the great history between painting and the village of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt began in the mid-19th century. Numerous painters fell in love with the wild coast and the changing light of North Finistère. Among them: Émile van Marcke, Maxime Maufra, Richard Miller, Mathurin Méheut, Moses Kisling, Léopold Pascal ...

The owner of the former Grand Hôtel ‘Saint-Jean et des Bains’ wanted to create a place for painters and set up a small studio where they could work in an idyllic setting with a magnificent panorama. Today, Saint-Jean-du-Doigt has been revived thanks to the Maison des Peintres (House of Painters) association, which organises exhibitions and artistic workshops in this unique location throughout the year.

Painting School "Bleimor"

The Argentinian artist Ricardo Cavallo has been living and working in Saint-Jean-du-Doigt since the 2000s. In 2007, he founded the ‘Bleimor’ painting school there, adjacent to his studio house, in order to pass on his values and his vision of art.

Arthus Jazz – Festival de Jazz a Saint-Jean

In August, Saint-Jean-du-Doigt vibrates with the sounds of jazz. The atmosphere is particularly relaxed with great proximity to the artists. Jazz à Saint-Jean is far removed from the big festivals, which are subject to a race for ratings. Nevertheless, the event has attracted artists of international renown from a wide range of genres. These include trumpeter Alain Brunet, guitarist Stéphane Fernandez, pianist Nico Morelli and saxophonist Michel Zenino.

Son ar mein - Le Petit Festival

Every year at the beginning of July, Son ar mein organises the Petit Festival de Musiques en Trégor in around 15 villages in the surrounding area. Son ar Mein mainly offers concerts of old music or in the spirit of old music: from the Middle Ages to classical music, on historical instruments and with the endeavour to perform faithfully to the original.

Fête du Violon

This biennial festival of Breton folk music has become a meeting place for violin virtuosos and amateurs alike.
